Finding H.D. – past and future female voices

The premiere of a new play by Mock Turtle Marionette Theater on the Lehigh Valley’s most influential artist, the celebrated feminist writer and LGBTQ icon Hilda Doolittle, featuring narrative, song, and puppetry.

This performances is the culmination of a year-long community partnership between Mock Turtle, Lehigh University English Department, Bethlehem Area Public Library, and the Bradbury-Sullivan LGBT Community Center.

It’s incredibly exciting to see this project moving forward. Directed by Jennie Gilrain (former Touchstone ensemble member and longtime Touchstone education partner) and co-conceived by Doug Roysdon (constant brother-in-art of Touchstone), this is so much more than a historical piece about a hugely important figure in the literary canon. It’s a look at misogyny, female voice, female leadership– past, present, and future. It’s a chance to celebrate H.D.’s words and legacy, and a chance to vision what the “future is female” of Bethlehem might look like.

H.D. left Bethlehem when she was nine years old, but the stories, places, and images of our city stayed with her, in her memories and in her writing, for years after. We’re looking forward to hearing what she has to say to us in 2019.

Finding H.D. performs as part of Festival UnBound October 5-8 at Touchstone Theatre.
