The Youth Project – a vision from the next generation

Youth from Bethlehem’s High Schools assemble to create a new, site-specific work about their dreams and concerns for the future. Over the course of 2019, they’re meeting monthly to write, play, devise, brainstorm, and create this original piece, rooted in tall tales, poetry, monsters, songs, and triumph.

I’m so excited to be directing this piece; over the course of rehearsals so far, we’ve talked about their concerns for the future, ranging from global warming to politics, over-dependence on technology to fear of being alone. And we’ve discussed what we bring, as we move forward to meet that future.

In terms of the play itself, it’s shaping up into a kind of Canterbury Tales-esque journey with quirky characters, giant fabric, and hopefully, fights with nerf weapons. Our ensemble of local teens is incredibly talented, bringing background in dance, instrumental music, stilt-walking, juggling, and a real willingness to share and play.
The Youth Project performs as part of Festival UnBound on October 5 & 6 at Payrow Plaza. Stay tuned for more details!
