Rocks in Japanese gardens represent the physical environment like mountains, outcrops in seas, or the shoreline. They may also symbolize strength and power.
We have our rocks in the arts in the Lehigh Valley. They are the part of the foundation upon which we build our vision for the future, remind ourselves of our history, nurture our spirits through good and bad times, and promote the beauty of our community.
Nineteen portraits comprise this exhibition. Each person chose where and how s/he wanted to be presented in her/his portrait. Our venues ranged from their homes to the Allentown and Bethlehem Rose Gardens, the Hoover-Mason Trestle, the Ice House, and Moravian College. The Lehigh Valley is certainly fortunate to have these rocks among us.
Untold Stories
DATE: Friday, October 4 – Sunday, October 13
TIME: All hours
VENUE: South Bethlehem Greenway
Artist Georges Braque said, “Art is a wound turned into light.” There are few greater wounds than the trauma of not having a place to call home. Untold Stories provides access to the healing power of art to people experiencing homeless or housing insecurity during New Bethany’s day program. This art will be displayed along the South Bethlehem Greenway throughout Festival UnBound. The benefit is twofold: First, it provides a creative outlet and an opportunity to provide a sense of purpose to people experiencing or at risk of homelessness. Second, it spreads awareness of homelessness in our community. Untold Stories is collaboration between St. Luke’s University Health Network, ArtsQuest’s Banana Factory, the Lehigh Valley Regional Homeless Advisory Board, Touchstone Theatre, the Community Action Development Corporation of Bethlehem, and New Bethany, Inc.

“Art can permeate the very deepest part of us, where no words exist.”
Eileen Miller, The Girl Who Spoke With Pictures
The initial impulse for this exhibit came from a challenge. The Baker Foundation offered seed funding to the CedarPointe outpatient clinic of Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Hospital to find a new way to serve the people with whom we were working. The response to this challenge became “Autism and the Arts”, a program using the arts to support independence and self expression for teenagers and young adults on the autism spectrum. Collaborating with The Autism Society – Lehigh Valley, Mikayla’s Voice, and other individuals supporting and/or living with disabilities, the project grew to include teens and young adults with a wide range of abilities, experiences, and perspectives. The art work you will see offers a window into both individual and collective voices of young people who are often not heard. Come see and listen to what they have to offer our community!
This exhibit is supported in part by Grants to Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Hospital’s “Autism and the Arts” Project from The Dexter F. and Dorothy H. Baker Foundation and The Good Shepherd ’s Women’s Giving Circle. The exhibit was created in collaboration with The Autism Society Lehigh Valley, Mikayla’s Voice, Touchstone Theatre, and Color Me Mine Lehigh Valley.
